By now you’ve taken (and retaken) a bunch of Khat’s classes, and perhaps you’d like to know a little more about this beautiful human being, yes? Well, in short, Khat is a lover of life and a movement specialist. She does many extracurricular activities, such as surfing, rollerskating, kickboxing, yoga, and of course, barre! She is also a property manager for some amazing sites in Bali! Please, enjoy this little interview for a glimpse into Khat’s life.
Q—Adrienne: “Tell us about you — what is your background, and how has that inspired the Strong series? Tell us what enriches your life!”
A—Khat: “My background seems to be rooted in team spirit. I’m the 8th of 9 kids in a big Filipino family. So I always grew up with a lot of rugrats around and people overall. In high school, I played and coached volleyball for the span of 9 years. There was always a group around to bounce energy off of, to motivate, and many times they’ve had to lift my spirits too. When I get in front of people, my goal is not only to have students feel the energy of others around but also to access a tool within themselves.. that they can tap into their inner cheerleader and inspire themselves to keep going even when times are tough. So when I’m training with heavier weights or an obstacle is in my way, I learned to take a deep breath and try. Simply show up. Climb the big hill. And believe deep strength will come with persistence and practice.”
Q—Adrienne: “Beautiful. And what does the Strong series signify for you?”
A—Khat: “This series is about deep power! These classes bridge the subtle strength and grace of barre with deep, explosive combination movements. This series introduces heavier weights and dynamic, full-body workouts. You’ll push last new barriers in your mind, your muscles and confidence. When you do some thing you never thought you could achieve, you’ll learn how much more you are capable of. There is no ceiling… The sky is the limit!”
Q—Adrienne: “How did you come to teach barre eclipse? Share a story or defining moment that led to you teaching barre.”
A—Khat: “I’d been taking Adrienne’s classes on Cody AND AloMoves. I was drawn to her teaching style and she was the first barre class I’d ever taken. I couldn’t understand how she could cue something so precisely that had my whooooole body shaking. So when I found out that she has teacher trainings for barre, it piqued my interest. I never planned to teach barre but had a feeling her style would compliment both my fitness coaching and yoga teaching. I was right! My classes got fuller and fuller. Students came far and wide to take my classes even through the pandemic and lockdown in Bali. I’m sooo grateful to learn her techniques of guiding with grace.
Q—Adrienne: “What a serendipitous journey we’ve had! OK, so, we would love to know.. what is your morning routine?”
A—Khat: “Usually, I’m out of the door bright and early to teach, so morning routines are very short. But I foam roll my spine (@blackroll is my fave) and do simple reclined twists every morning—my lower back is always sensitive, so I do simple stretches a few times throughout the day. The skincare routine is essential, and it starts every night so by the morning I’m ready for toner and SPF only. Matcha in the morning and quiet solo time or jamming to music is much needed.”
Q—Adrienne: “I love it. OK, last thing… as an instructor and fitness enthusiast, what is one thing you cannot live without?”
A—Khat: “A really comfy and buttery workout set. I love brands that gently hug the body like a second skin instead of squishing me. Oh, and lots of water and fruits!”
